Military exercises 2017
Over the past years number of military exercises held in Lithuanian increases. In 2017 the aim is to retain high intensity of the exercises while strengthening interoperability with allies and ensuring preparedness of forces to counter various ranges of threats.
In 2017 Lithuanian soldiers take part in over 70 national, regional, NATO and other exercises of different scopes both on the territory of Lithuania and other countries.
Major exercises in 2017
International exercise in the Baltic Sea BALTRON Squadron Exercise 17/1. The exercise will be held in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea. It is annual tactical drills of the Baltic (Lithuanian and Latvian) Naval Squadron, BALTRON. On Lithuania's behalf, four ships will take in the manoeuvres: LNS Kuršis (M54), LNS Aukštaitis (P14), LNS Dzūkas (P12), and LNS Jotvingis (N42), and also Lithuanian Naval Flotilla HQ.
Annual NATO search and rescue exercise (SAREX) Dynamic Mercy 17. The exercise will take place in the territorial waters of Latvia in the Baltic Sea. The exercise is based on the Chicago Convention 1947 and the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue 1947 and in line with standards and procedures of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual (IAMSAR). The annual Exercise Dynamic Mercy is held in the Atlantic Ocean or the Baltic Sea by the Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) based in Northwood (UK). Lithuania will be represented by search and rescue patrol ship of the Lithuanian Navy Šakiai.
Annual national Lithuanian Navy Exercise Cormorant 17. The exercise will take place in Klaipėda and the territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea. The exercise trains units of the Lithuanian Navy for service assignments, assesses the ability of the service to function in an integrated manner. The exercise will be running on April 24- May 5.
National Exercise Lightning Strike: trains the Rapid Response Force of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, encompasses partial mobilisation. The exercise is held for the Rapid Response Force and the Domestic Support Forces, agencies and authorities under the Ministries of the Interior and Health.
NATO Exercise Steadfast Cobalt is a certification exercise. It assesses the ability of communication units to ensure data exchange and maintenance of communication among NATO Response Force (NRF) tactical units, joint and component headquarters. The exercise will be attended by over 1,000 soldiers from 19 NATO states.
International maritime Exercise Baltic Fortress 17. The exercise will take place in the international waters and exclusive economic zone of Lithuania The annual maritime exercise is aimed at providing opportunity for students of the international Baltic Naval Intermediate Command and Staff Course (NICSC) from to carry out real-life exercise planning and train staff procedures during various staff-level exercises and real-life manoeuvres at sea while operating in multinational environment and using operational English terminology. Four ships of the Lithuanian Navy will attend: Kuršis (M54), Jotvingis (N42), Dzūkas (P12) and Aukštaitis (P14) and headquarters of the Naval Flotilla. The exercise will take place on May 19-26.
International Exercise Saber Strike. The exercise is organised by the United States European Command (EUCOM) concurrently in the three Baltic States. The exercise trains planning and execution of defensive operations and enhances interoperability in joint Baltic and U.S. military units. National Exercise Iron Wolf is an integral part of Saber Strike.
National Exercise Flaming Thunder. The exercise trains artillery and fire support capabilities. Apart from Lithuanian military personnel, the exercise will be attended by roughly 500 allied troops from Portugal, U.S., Germany, and Latvia. Roughly 50 soldiers from Ukraine are also expected to train in the exercise.
International maritime Exercise Baltops 17. The goal of the exercise is to enhance and strengthen cooperation and interaction among the participating forces from different countries while conducting complex operations, and to increase the level of competence of the participating forces. The exercise will take place in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zones of Estonia, Finland, Germany, Poland, and Sweden. The exercise is organised by the U.S. Navy and attended by NATO and Nordic military units. Lithuania will be represented by two ships - LNS Kuršis (M54) and Žemaitis (P11), also, by officers of the Lithuanian Navy and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Diving Unit. The exercise will take place on June 2-17.
International Exercise Tobruq legacy. Will take place on July 10-21 in three countries: Romania, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania. The exercise will train ground air defence units to carry out Article 5 operations alongside NATO allies from the UK, U.S., Latvia, and Poland. The exercise will be attended by roughly 450 troops (350 allied troops and 100 Lithuania). National Exercise Vigilant Falcon 17 testing command and control procedures of the Lithuanian Air Force will constitute and integral part of it.
Largest international neutralisation of undetonated ammunition operation in the Baltic Sea Open Spirit. Search for and destruction of explosive historical remnant will take place in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of Latvia in the Baltic Sea. Lithuania will be represented by three ships: LNS Sūduvis (M52), LNS Skalvis (M53) and Jotvingis (N42), and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Diving Unit. The operation will be running on August 18-31.
International exercise of BALTRON and the Lithuanian Naval Flotilla in the Baltic Sea BALTRON Squadron Exercise 17/2". The exercise will be held in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea. The annual tactical drill of the Baltic (Lithuanian and Latvian) Naval Squadron, BALTRON, will be attended by all ships of the Lithuanian Navy. The exercise will take place on July 31-August 8.
International trilateral search and rescue exercise in the Baltic Sea LIT-POL-RU 17. The exercise will take place in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of Poland in the Baltic Sea. It is an international civilian exercise attended by Lithuanian, Polish and Russian maritime rescue coordination centres, search and rescue ships and aircraft in order to test and hone the countries' readiness to act in concert and a coordinated manner while conducting search and rescue operations in the Baltic Sea. Lithuania will be represented by search and rescue ship LNS Šakiai.
National Exercise Thunder. The scenario of this rescue exercise features a fictitious air crash. The exercise trains corresponding procedures in an in and around airport area of operations in case of an air incident (aircraft crash); hones interaction among all services and departments to be better prepared for possible incidents (crashes).
International Exercise Northern Coast 17. The exercise aims at enhancing interoperability of multinational forces in order to improve the ability of the training military units and commanding staffs to act in a joint military unit in case of a crisis. It is an annual large-scale international exercise for naval, air, land and special operations military units from NATO and European Union countries. Lithuania will be represented in the exercise by Lithuanian Navy ships LNS Sūduvis (M52) and LNS Aukštaitis (P14), Very Shallow Waters EOD Team of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Diving Unit, and two officers of the Lithuanian Navy. The exercise will be running on September 8-22 in the Baltic Sea.
International maritime pollution incident response Exercise Balex Delta 17. The exercise will take place in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of the Russian Federation (Kaliningrad oblast). The drills is organised to test the readiness of the Baltic states to respond together to large-scale oil spills in the Baltic Sea. The exercise will put to test Baltic Sea coastal states' pollution incident response system, procedures, interaction among oil spill response ships, their capabilities and potential, interaction with coastal special services in charge of clearing the coast. Lithuania will be represented by the search and rescue ship LNS Šakiai.
International Exercise Hunter. Over 1,200 soldiers from Lithuania, U.S., Canada, Latvia, Poland, and Germany will train anti-armour operations and destroying other targets of hostile forces.
International Exercise Trident Juncture 17. The exercise will certify the NATO Response Force ready for standby and to respond to a crisis. It is a large-scale exercises involving land, maritime, air, and special forces components.
