According to a resolution of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Lithuanian military personnel are mandated to be deployed to three NATO-led operations till 31 December 2013 - the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operation in Afghanistan (up to 290 military and civilians), the Kosovo Force (KFOR) operation (up to 5 military and civilian) and the counter-piracy operation Ocean Shield (up to 30 military and civilians); and to one counter-piracy operation of the European Union ATALANTA (up to 30 military and civilians).
Legal basis for Lithuania's contributions to multinational operations is provided by collective defence and security agreements. By fulfilling multinational commitments Lithuania adheres to the efforts of the international community to enhance security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic space and at the same time implements priorities of the national foreign policy.
Lithuanian military personnel are currently deployed in Afghanistan where they carry out NATO-led operations, one logistics specialist serves at the headquarters of the NATO-led Kosovo Forces (KFOR) operation, and one Lithuanian naval officer is posted to the operation ATALANTA Operational Headquarters Northwood (UK). Two instructors of the Lithuanian Armed Forces are deployed to Mali to take part in the European Union Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali).
