NATO Training mission - Iraq (NTM-I)

On 28 June 2004, leaders of NATO countries agreed in Istanbul to support Iraq by training its security forces. NATO Training Implementation Mission, later renamed as NATO Training Mission, was launched on 30 June 2004. Purpose of the mission was to provide training and advice to senior and the supreme command level personnel of the Iraqi Security Forces in Iraq, national institutions of NATO and the allies, and training centers. As of the 1st of August of 2004 NTM-I was been residing in Bagdad providing mentoring and training for the top-ranking personnel of the Iraqi Security Forces and coordinating support of the member states and partners for the Iraqi forces.

Having not received a request from Iraq to prolong the mission, the North Atlantic Council passed a decision on 12 December 2011 to terminate the mission and withdraw NATO forces before 31 December 2011. On December 22 two Lithuanian officers who had been serving in NTM-I returned to Lithuania.

NTM-I involved 23 NATO countries and one partner state. NATO will continue collaboration with the Iraqi Government on the basis of bilateral agreements.
