On February 5 and 6 Commander of the Communications and Information Systems (CIS) Group of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Major General Thomas Franz paid a visit in Lithuania. The Commander NATO CIS Group came to review the Deployable Communication and Information Systems Module (DCISM) and to familiarise with the readiness level of the unit for NATO tasks and its combat training plans and challenges.

Escorted by Chief of the Joint Headquarters of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Brigadier General Vilmantas Tamošaitis, Maj Gen T. Franz visited the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas Headquarters Battalion which hosts the DCISM as a national Lithuanian communication and information systems (CIS) unit assigned for the completion of NATO operations.

Commander of the Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Gintaras Jurčiukonis presented to the guests the Battalion's structure, tasks completed, objectives pursued and familiarised them with the process of integrating the DCISM when combat training of the Battalion is carried out and in the process of completing the Battalion's tasks.

"Familiarisation with the structure of your Battalion was profitable as it is not a conventional structure. I am convinced that you are permanently dealing with numerous challenges related to that, including the point of integration of the available capabilities when completing the tasks of both -  the Lithuanian Armed Forces and NATO", Maj Gen T. Franz said. According to him, the findings of the visit will be useful in planning further development of this and other NATO's DCISMs.

Maj Gen T. Franc evaluated the Lithuanian DCISM as having progressed noticeably since its establishment in August 2009. In the subsequent sessions it was agreed that the DCISM of the Lithuanian Armed Forces would reach full operation capability according to NATO's requirements till 2015.

Later the guest and his delegation visited the museum of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas Headquarters Battalion where they discovered the Battalion's background and the most interesting exhibits.

The objective of the Deployable Communication and Information Systems Module of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas Headquarters Battalion is to support the command and control (C2) process of NATO's interim-deployable headquarters by communications and information systems.
