NDVF 3rd Territorial Unit Žemaičiai Military District, Klaipėda

On 22 May 1991, by the order of the National Defence Volunteer Forces Chief of staff Klaipėda district volunteer territorial unit was established. On 15 January 1999 Klaipėda territorial Unit was named as the 3rd territorial Unit Žemaičiai. Now National Defence Volunteer Forces 3rd territorial Unit Žemaičiai Military district is comprised of Klaipėda, Gargždai, Plungė, Skuodas, Mažeikiai, Kretinga, Telšiai, Šilalė, Tauragė, Šilutė infantry and staff support companies. After Lithuania has joined the NATO the reform of National Defence Volunteer Forces was began to implement. The reform seeks to progress Volunteer forces to modern, formed on voluntary principles, sustained on conceptions and material resources Volunteer Forces able to ensure timely response to a wide spectrum of challenges.
National Defence Volunteer Forces 3rd territorial Unit Žemaičiai Military district is formed from volunteers, professional military service soldiers and civil personnel. In the unit presently there are approximately 1000 volunteers.
