Timeline of exercises ‘Lightning Strike 2017‘


In order to create as realistic exercises as possible, exact locations of exercises and incidents will not be available in advance. Therefore, press representatives, who are willing to follow episodes of the exercises, please contact public relations officer.


28th April
Various demonstrations of individuals who are hostile to city government will be organized in Marijampolė and Vilkaviškis.


29th April - 1th May
According to the scenario of the exercises, quantity of different incidents related to the countries security will be increased at Lithuanian border sections. Due to this, state border guard control will be enhanced invoking Peacetime Operation Forces which will cooperate with officers from the State Border Guard Service (SBGS). Exercises will proceed in the cordons of SBGS territorial units from Pagėgiai, Vilnius and Varėna.

1th May
Cities of Marijampolė and Vilkaviškis will be announced as military operation areas, where Rapid Reaction Forces arrival is planned. Around 800 soldiers with machinery from Lithuanian Grand Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalion will be dislocating in Marijampolė, while other 800 troops from Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion in Rukla (Jonava mun.) will be dislocating in Vilkaviškis.

2-6th May
Joint military operations will be carried out in the cities, where acoustic ammunition and pyrotechnics will be utilized. On the ground citizens will see patrolling armed Lithuanian Armed Forces troops with military machinery, e.g. M113 armored personnel carriers, while above them Air Force helicopters will be also participating in the exercises.


5th May
Partial mobilization exercises will take place, where national service administrating personnel will be performing tasks in the case of mobilization. In order to fulfill exercises objectives, 12 conscription stations will be established. Reserve troops who performed military service in 2000-2012 and were retired will be involved in these trainings.

6th May
Visitors and Media day, where will be a possibility to observe various operations of Rapid Reaction Forces and other units.


7-8th May
Closure of the exercises and Rapid Reaction Forces departure to the permanent dislocation in Alytus and Rukla, Jonavos mun.
