Residents of Lithuania should note: movement of military equipment columns will increase during preparation period and subsequent military exercises

Lithuanian people will see the first columns of military vehicles in the territory of Lithuania in the nearest while. It will be the beginning of preparation for important, and particularly significant in security terms to Lithuania and the region, multinational exercises about to begin in Lithuania and the Baltic states. Movement of vehicles will be of low intensity which will reach the peak on June 6-9 when the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of our NATO ally, the US Army, will be redeploying: roughly 3 thousand troops and 1.500 units of combat equipment will be moving from Germany to the Baltic states and Poland.

During the past several days Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas attended meetings of European Union and NATO Military Committees in Brussels, Belgium.
On May 15 Chiefs of Defence of EU countries met at the EU Council HQ and discussed implementation of the EU Global Strategy on security and defence, EU cooperation with NATO and the UN, EU military operations, training missions and development of military capabilities chaired by General Mikhail.

On May 16-17 Chief of the Defence Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Maj Gen Vitalijus Vaikšnoras is attending meetings of the Multinational Joint Commission on Defense Reform and Security Cooperation with Ukraine (MJC) which coordinates international support to Ukraine's armed forces reform, in Kiev, Ukraine.

Soldiers of Portugal's rotational force welcomed in Klaipėda

Wednesday, May 16, a welcome ceremony was held in Klaipėda University square for the rotational force from Portugal of roughly 150 soldiers. The line-up also included soldiers with the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalion and participants of trained reserve exercise.

Fourth company-sized rotation of Portugal's troops deploy to Lithuania for training

Portugal's rotational forces are deploying in Lithuania to train for four months alongside colleagues from the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalion, Motorised Infantry Brigade Griffon. A welcome ceremony for the troops will be held on May 16 in Klaipėda University yard.

Over a 100 US Marines arrived in Klaipėda, Lithuania with equipment to take part in intense indirect fire support specialists' training of May 14.


Annual indirect live fire exercise Flaming Thunder is beginning for the sixth year on May 14 at General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė (Švenčionių district) and Gaižiūnai Training Area (Jonava district). The exercise will run until May 25 training over 1,200 participants to deliver live fire at land and waterborne targets from indirect fire support equipment during the light and dark parts of the day.

Lithuanian and German armies expand collaboration

"Lt Gen Jörg Vollmer and I have discussed opportunities of training specialists of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf. It has been agreed to start training equipment maintenance personnel this year, and to train platoon and company commanders at Germany's training centre as of next year. The course specialty focuses on training a mechanised infantry unit," Brig Gen Valdemaras Rupšys said after the visit in Germany.

"From military perspective we are a single operational area, therefore we have to seek maximally close collaboration in planning, maintaining, and enhancing our land, sea, and air capabilities," Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas said at the meeting of the Baltic Defence Committee at Raudondvaris Castle Manor in Raudondvaris (Kaunas district) on May 7.
